A Possible Brown Dwarf Companion to the White Dwarf Gd1400
نویسنده
چکیده
An unresolved, likely L dwarf companion to the DA white dwarf GD1400 is reported. This would be only the second such system known, discovered 17 years after the prototype L dwarf, GD165B, was determined to be a companion to a white dwarf. Photometric observations and model predicted stellar parameters of the well studied white dwarf primary indicate that GD1400B has J−K & 2.0 and MK = 12.13 mag. If correct, this would place GD1400B at spectral type L6, and it would be the lowest luminosity unevolved companion known to a white dwarf, and thus a definite brown dwarf. However, a low resolution Keck NIRSPEC 2.1−2.4μm spectrum may not be consistent with known L dwarfs. Uncertainties in classification remain until the binary is resolved or a trigonometric parallax is measured. Fluxes are measured for the DA white dwarf plus brown dwarf pair GD 1400 with the Infrared Array Camera on the Spitzer Space Telescope. GD 1400 displays an infrared excess over the entire 3 − 8µm region consistent with the presence of a mid-to late-type L dwarf companion. A discussion is given regarding current knowledge of this unique system.

متن کاملKeck Speckle Imaging of the White Dwarf G29-38: No Brown Dwarf Companion Detected
The white dwarf Giclas 29-38 has attracted much attention due to its large infrared excess and the suggestion that excess might be due to a companion brown dwarf. We observed this object using speckle interferometry at the Keck telescope, obtaining diffraction-limited resolution (55 milliarcseconds) at K band, and found it unresolved. Assuming the entire K band excess is due to a single point-l...
متن کاملThe Discovery of a Companion to the Lowest Mass White Dwarf
We report the detection of a radial velocity companion to SDSS J091709.55+463821.8, the lowest mass white dwarf currently known with M ∼ 0.17M⊙. The radial velocity of the white dwarf shows variations with a semiamplitude of 148.8 ± 6.9 km s and a period of 7.5936 ± 0.0024 hours, which implies a companion mass of M ≥ 0.28M⊙. The lack of evidence of a companion in the optical photometry forces a...
متن کاملEvidence for a substellar secondary in the magnetic cataclysmic binary EF
Low-state spectrophotometry of the short-period polar EF Eridani (P orb = 81 min) found the system at V = 18:0 with no trace of the companion (Wheatley and Ramsay 1998). We show that the lack of such spectral features implies that the companion to the white dwarf in EF Eri has a spectral type later than M9 and is either a transition object at the brink of hydrogen burning or a brown dwarf. The ...
